You want to enjoy every mouthful of your favorite food? Want to savor every bite of your favorite dishes? This homemade basil pesto is a must-try. This sauce is bursting with flavor. Sweet basil, garlic and Parmesan combine to create a deliciously aromatic sauce that pairs well with pasta, pizzas and sandwiches.
You don't need to be an expert chef to prepare this dish, and especially not with this recipe. You will be guided through each step of the recipe, as we transform a few ingredients into your favorite Italian accessory.
You may have already seen my tasty dairy-free spinach pesto or broccoli pesto recipe.
Why You'll Love This Recipe
- Sweet basil and lemon juice give your food a fresh flavor.
- This versatile dip can be served with pasta, bruschettas, sandwiches, salads and more.
- The recipe is quick and easy to prepare, but the taste of fresh fruit is much better.
Is this basil pesto healthy?
- Basil, a key ingredient in this pesto contains antioxidants and vitamin K.
- Garlic benefits your heart and immune system
- Lemon juice contains vitamin C
- Both olive oil and pinenuts contain monounsaturated fatty acids (a healthy type of fat) that keep the low-density (or bad) cholesterol low.
- Basil pesto contains sodium and saturated fats, even though it is rich in calcium and protein.
Ingredients
The recipe can be scaled up or down, so you can adjust the quantities to suit your needs.
- 2 cups fresh sweet basil
- 1 clove of garlic
- 1/4 cup Parmesan (finely grated).
- Pine nuts - 1/4 cup
- Half a lemon juice
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- Salt and pepper
Instrucciones
Blend
In a food processor, blend the pine nuts, garlic, lemon juice and salt with the pepper.
Add
Add the basil, and blend until smooth. Add the Parmesan cheese and blend.
Drizzle
Pour slowly drizzle olive oil into the blender while blending.
Variations
-
Sunflower seeds can be used in place of pine nuts (e.g., poor man's Pine Nut
). Cashews and walnuts can be used. Using a different seed or nut will change the flavor of pesto. - If you feel it needs more bulk, add a handful of spinach and arugula.
- Pesto can contain a variety of herbs. You can try cilantro, mint, parsley or any other herb.
Serving Suggestions
Basil pesto can be used in a variety of dishes. Some chefs love to add it to freshly cooked pasta. (I use it in my recipe for Turkey Meatballs.) This is also an important ingredient in a Caprese Salad (or you can try my recipe for Cauliflower Caprese skillet). Mix into a risotto or grain bowl. Spread it on paninis, wraps or sandwiches. You can also use it as a marinade to cook meat or vegetables (try my Baked Salmon With Asian Cilantro Pesto). You can add a little to flatbread or pizza. You can add some sauce to a creamy soup.
FAQs
You can substitute the cheese with nutritional yeast, cashews, or plant-based Parmesan.
Add some extra olive to thin the sauce a little.
If you want to make a pesto without nuts, simply swap the nuts for sunflower or pumpkin seeds. If you don't want to use nuts or seeds, simply add more Parmesan and olive oil for the perfect pesto texture.
Fresh basil is the best option. It's vibrant and has a wonderful aroma. If you only have dried basil, then go ahead! Use 1/3 less because the flavor is stronger.
Basil Pesto: How to store it
Pour a tiny bit of olive on top and store in the refrigerator to maintain that beautiful green color. This pesto will last for up to a full week. Perfect for a quick dinner on a busy weeknight!
You can freeze your pesto if you haven't added parmesan. I use an ice-cube tray all the time! Wrap the cubes in plastic wrap, and then freeze them. You can freeze them solid for up to three months. You can eat the pesto cubes when you are ready. Just thaw them, add freshly grated cheddar, and enjoy! Enjoy!
Basil Pesto, the Perfect Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 cups fresh sweet basil
- 1 clove garlic
- 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese finely grated
- 1/4 cup pine nuts
- 1/2 lemon juice
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- Salt and Pepper
Instructions
-
In a food processor, blend the pine nuts, garlic, lemon juice and salt with the pepper.
-
Blend the basil until it is smooth.
-
Add the Parmesan. As you blend, slowly drizzle in the olive oil through the spout.
Notes
- If you have dried basil available, it can be used. However, fresh basil is preferred as it's more aromatic and vibrant. Remember that dried basil has a stronger taste, so you only need to use 1/3 of the fresh variety.

Frequently Asked Questions
How to Store Your Spices?
They should be kept out of direct sunlight and heat in an airtight container.
To store spices for longer periods of time, place them in a dark cupboard. This will preserve them and prevent any oxidation.
Keep spices dry and away from sunlight in a cool, dry place. The spice may lose flavour and aroma if placed near a window or heater.
Spices need to be kept in an airtight glass container or tin. If storing in plastic containers, make sure there is no moisture inside the container.
It is vital to always check the seal after opening, resealing and before storing.
Don't toss out any leftover spices. Don't throw them away, instead use them in new recipes. You can even freeze them to extend their shelf life.
Can you spice up a drink?
I love the way spices add flavour to food. How do you make spices alive in drinks?
Spices can bring out the best of any beverage. Add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to your favorite beverage, such as coffee, tea, or hot chocolate.
However, most recipes call for ground spice so you will need fresh whole spices. While this makes sense, it is costly, takes time and requires storage space.
Here's where the magic happens. With your creativity, you can turn your favorite spices into easy-to-use powdered products. Then you can mix them into your favourite beverages to create delicious spiced drinks.
There are two methods to make these powders. The first involves the grinding of whole spices to make fine powder. Another uses a mortar and pestle to grind the spices into a finer consistency.
Whichever method you choose, you'll find that the resulting powder is much easier to measure out and store than whole spices. The powder is stable so you don't run low on stock.
Mixing different spices can create new flavors. To make minty water, you can combine spearmint and peppermint leaves. Or ginger and cardamom pods to make spicy ginger tea.
Once you have mastered the art of making powdered spices you can use that same technique for herbs. You can use basil, rosemary and thyme as common herbs.
There are many options. Powdered spices can be used to add flavour to beverages or enhance the flavor of dishes like soups, salads and pasta.
What mint is used in Thai food?
The most common type of mint used in Thai cuisine is lime-leaf mint (Mentha Cervina).
It is mild and lemony in flavour, which adds freshness as well as zing to dishes. Thai dishes often include other spices such as galangal (lemongrass), garlic, and coriander.
Mint can be used as a sweet or savoury herb. For authentic Thai flavours, you must use the right spices and herbs.
For extra flavor, make sure to add lime-leaf mint next time you prepare a Thai meal!
Happy cooking!

How To
How to Make a Garlic Press
A garlic presse is an indispensable tool for home chefs. It makes it easy to mince garlic into a paste, puree it into soups or salad dressings, or even make a sauce. You can also crush whole garlic cloves to make buttery spreads or garlic seasonings.
It's possible to be confused if you don’t yet own a garlicpress. Luckily, we've got some tips to help you get started.
First, you need a large dish. Place the bowl beneath the press, and then pour the crushed garlic in it. Now, adjust the pressure regulator valve until it reaches maximum.
Next, turn the handle clockwise until you hear a click. You will be able to slide the blade over the bowl by lifting the top part of your press. Continue turning the handle counterclockwise to close the blades.
Finally, remove the pressed garlic.
Here are other ways you can make use of this versatile tool.
- You can add minced garlic to soups and sauces, salads, dips, or as a seasoning.
- To crush whole garlic cloves, use the press to create a buttery spread
- Place whole garlic cloves in a pizza dough and crush them before baking
- Make roasted garlic mashed potatoes, or creamy polenta.
- Use the press for homemade pesto
- Puree garlic in a smooth vinaigrette
